Pilgrimage Site Kohútovo

kohutovo kaplnka

It is one of the most sought-after places in the vicinity of Nová Baňa. The pilgrimage site owes its origin to the discovery of a rich water spring during the Great Drought in 1863.

The summer of 1863 was extremely dry, and there was widespread suffering from the lack of water. A sheep grazing in Kohútov began to dig into the dry grass and discovered the water spring. The fact that the water appeared in a place exposed to drought at other times was considered a miracle. Pilgrims started to gather at the spring of this supposedly healing water. The place was declared merciful in June 1866 by Štefan Moyzes, bishop of Banská Bystrica. Already in 1869, a neo-Gothic chapel was built with proceeds donated by pilgrims. It is surrounded by a small botanical garden with a valuable giant sequoia.

This is the site of traditional May pilgrimages, and Our Lady pilgrimage in September.
