The ruins of Revište Castle overlook the romantic landscape above the valley of the Hron river in central Slovakia near municipality Hliník nad Hronom. They are on a steep cliff almost 100m above the Hron floodplain. There is a beautiful meadow below the castle, a popular campsite for boaters navigating the Hron river.
The castle was built in the 14th century as part of the defense line for mining towns of Central Slovakia and the Hron trade route. Its older Gothic architecture was fortified with Renaissance bastions. The castle was taken over and ravaged by the insurgent troops of Imrich Thököly in 1678. It left the castle in ruins, with only a few walls preserved. The Association for Revište Castle Preservation (“Združenie na záchranu hradu Revište”) carries out restoration works.
