The ruins of Šášov Castle loom above the former municipality “Šášovské Podhradie”, nowadays incorporated in the district city “Žiar nad Hronom”. The ruins are approximately 2 km from the town.
In the past, the castle overlooked the crossroad of routes to the towns of Zvolen and Kremnica, along the Hron river. It was built in the altitude of 340m on the “Orlí kameň” (“Eagle’s Rock”) directly above the Hron river.
Nowadays, the castle is being operated and gradually reconstructed by the Association for Šášov Castle Preservation (“Združenie na záchranu hradu Šášov”). At the start of a hiking trail, a memorial room open to the public houses an ethnographic exhibition, with small archaeological finds from the castle, and explanations about the castle history.
