Spring of the Žitava river

pramen_zitavy

The Žitava river flows through the Nitra region for most of its 99.3 km course. Its spring emerges in the cadastre of Veľká Lehota village in the Banská Bystrica region, at an altitude of 680 m above sea level, and it flows into the Nitra river near the town of Šurany.

The spring of the Žitava river is located in a submerged swamp (terrain depression) on the left side of the road connecting Veľká Lehota with Nová Baňa. This location is permanently waterlogged and is never used for grazing. There are several smaller waterlogged areas, from which rivulets emerge and join to create one little stream. You can reach the spring with a 20 minute walk. Depart from the municipal office, go up through the village, and follow the signs. A white tourist information sign which indicates the site of the spring can be seen from the road.
