This dominant landmark of the town was built in the 14th century, most probably as a royal house.
It was the official seat of the mining count, where miners handed precious metals over to test its purity. This Gothic fortress originally had four floors, and was rebuilt following a fire in the first half of the 18th century, when the third floor was removed and a square tower added. The Pohronie museum has resided in the town hall since 1972. Several permanent exhibitions are installed in the museum (exposition of prehistoric habitation in the Žiar Basin; town history; glassmaking; ethnography, art, and history exhibitions; Putikov vŕšok volcano, etc.). The museum regularly updates exhibitions on a variety of topics.
