Zámčisko, Nová Baňa

zamcisko

The archaeological site Zámčisko is located 8 km west of Nová Baňa above the settlements of Stará Huta and Bukovina on a steep hill (690 m above sea level) under the highest hill of the Pohronský Inovec - Veľký Inovec.

The 430m long hillfort (rampart), reinforced from the inside with a solid stone circle, is a piece of evidence for a massive fortification system that connects to a 200-meter-long defensive line in the north, aided by favorable terrain ondulation. The hillfort "Zámčisko" includes longer sections made of stone walls. The massive rampart provided protection for the whole area of the hillfort with its wavy terrain, covering the area of approximately 7 hectares. The area of the hillfort is very uneven, the height of the wall at the best-preserved place exceeds 250 cm, and the ditch reaches a depth of 150 cm at some points.

The fortified hillfort apparently served as refuge for inhabitants from the wider vicinity in turbulent times of conflicts. The hillfort had enormous strategic advantage because it is difficult to reach. It has a good view to the east Hron River valley, providing a key defense of the narrow passage with the road to Veľká Lehota, probably used since ancient times as a connecting road from upper Požitavie to central GRON region.
