The abandoned village of Horné Opatovce lies near Žiar nad Hronom. The village dates almost 900 years back in history, but its inhabitants were forced to leave by an environmental catastrophe bestowed by a well-known aluminum factory in the sixties. Only the Church of St. Lawrence, the monument with a model of the abandoned village, and a cemetery with a silhouette of a factory in the background were preserved. The place is a dark tourism destination with a very special atmosphere. Former residents regularly meet here and take care of the area around the church.
